CNN —A man has pleaded guilty to stealing a toilet made entirely from 18-carat gold and worth more than $6 million from the English stately home where wartime leader Winston Churchill was born. It had been plumbed into the building so the theft also caused significant damage and flooding, police reported at the time. "Daddy, Daddy", a large scale recreation of the drowning Disney character Pinocchio, created by artist Maurizio Cattelan, is seen in a pool at Blenheim Palace on September 12, 2019. The golden toilet, titled "America," was part of the same exhibition at the stately home. Prime Minister António Costa of Portugal resigned unexpectedly on Tuesday, hours after the police raided government buildings as part of an inquiry into corruption and “influence peddling” and issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Costa’s chief of staff. Mr. Costa, who had been in power since 2015, said in televised remarks that he had been “surprised” to learn that he would be the subject of criminal proceedings and that “no illicit act weighs on my conscience.”“However, I believe that the dignity of the office of the prime minister is not compatible with any suspicion about your integrity, your good conduct and even less with the practical suspicion of any criminal act,” he added. “Therefore, in these circumstances, obviously, I presented my resignation.”A judge authorized police to search of 37 locations — including the office of Mr. Costa’s chief of staff, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Infrastructure, a City Council office in the town of Sines and several private homes, according to a statement from the prosecutor general’s office.

Costa, who prosecutors said was the target of a separate investigation, announced the decision in a televised statement after meeting President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Over 40 searches were carried out on Tuesday at several government buildings, including Escaria's office and the infrastructure and environment ministries, the prosecutor's office said. "At stake may be ... facts capable of constituting crimes of malfeasance, active and passive corruption of politicians and influence peddling," the prosecutor's office said.

"The demand for professionals with knowledge in AI research, machine learning, deep learning — it truly outpaces the available supply of candidates," Sines said. A machine learning researcher role at the trading firm Jane Street indicated a salary range of $250,000 to $300,000, for example. And Disney is looking to hire a senior machine learning engineer with expertise in machine learning, algorithms, and statistical methods; the entertainment giant is offering an annual salary of $145,400 to $199,870. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn May, HR firm Scratch posted a job listing for a remote senior machine-learning engineer for a client. The position — which had a listed salary range of $120,000 to $185,000 — required "familiarity with current AI tools" such as ChatGPT.

LISBON, July 26 (Reuters) - Portugal is interested in hosting a new high-capacity subsea cable to North America to improve internet connectivity between Europe and the U.S., the secretary of state for digitalisation told Reuters on Wednesday. Subsea cables form the backbone of the world wide web, carrying 99% of global data traffic. Two high-capacity subsea cables already link Portugal with other continents - the Google (GOOGL.O)-owned Equiano cable that runs to South Africa via other African countries, and the EllaLink that runs to Brazil from Sines, south of Lisbon. "Our aim is to improve connectivity between Europe and the U.S., implying that Sines would become yet another gateway," Mario Campolargo said. Portugal already has mega-investments lined up in Sines to produce renewable energy and green hydrogen to power industry and energy-intensive data centres.

Orcas keep attacking sailboats off the coasts of Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. One sailor shared his encounter with killer whales, after a pod of orcas sank a boat last year. Orca attacks have sometimes immobilized sailboats, but local media said that, in this instance, it caused so much damage that the vessel started to sink. The passengers, who were sleeping at the time of the attack, were traveling from Lisbon to the Algarve, per the local media outlet Portugal Resident. And that number comes from a collaboration of scientists collecting reports, not from local media outlets.
LISBON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Portugal wants to speed up investments in green hydrogen projects, which are essential to decarbonize the economy, and will end mandatory environmental assessments for them in March 2023, Prime Minister Antonio Costa said. Portugal expects to become a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen with 70 private investors or groups planning to spend 10 billion euros ($10.51 billion). Environmentalists have criticized the so-called Simplex package as it may have impacts on nature and the well-being of populations. Portugal's largest utility EDP (EDP.LS) and oil and gas company Galp Energia (GALP.LS) are both planning to build green hydrogen plants in the industrial hub of Sines. The three main glass producers and two biggest cement makers, together accounting for 10% of the country's industrial carbon emissions, also joined a new consortium to launch a green hydrogen plant.
